Job Description
Norvik Group (Hospital and Enterprise) owns Norvik Enterprises Ltd, one of the leading Importers and distributors of pharmaceutical & medical products in Uganda and Norvik Hospital.
Job Summary: The Hospital Laboratory Technician is responsible for performing routine and specialized laboratory tests, preparing specimens, operating and maintaining laboratory equipment, and ensuring accurate and timely results for patient diagnosis and treatment. The technician works under the supervision of a Laboratory HOD/Chief Medical Technologist and collaborates with healthcare professionals to provide quality patient care.
Duties and Responsibilities
Laboratory Testing and Procedures:
Specimen Collection and Preparation:
Collect, label, and process blood, urine, and other body fluid samples from patients.
Prepare specimens for testing according to standard protocols.
Performing Tests:
Conduct routine and specialized laboratory tests, including but not limited to hematology, biochemistry, microbiology, immunology, blood banking and phlebotomy.
Operate and maintain laboratory equipment and instruments.
Quality Control:
Perform quality control checks on laboratory tests and equipment.
Ensure compliance with laboratory safety protocols and quality standards.
Document and report any deviations from standard procedures.
Data Management and Reporting:
Record Keeping:
Accurately document test results and maintain detailed records of laboratory activities.
Enter test data into the laboratory information system (LIS).
Result Analysis:
Analyze and interpret test results, identifying any abnormalities or issues.
Communicate results to physicians and other healthcare providers in a timely manner.
Equipment Maintenance:
Maintenance and Calibration:
Perform regular maintenance and calibration of laboratory equipment.
Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues with equipment.
Inventory Management:
Monitor and maintain laboratory supplies and reagents.
Place orders for supplies as needed to ensure continuous operation.
Professional Development and Compliance:
Continuing Education:
Stay updated with advancements in laboratory techniques and technologies.
Participate in continuing education and professional development opportunities.
Regulatory Compliance:
Adhere to all hospital policies, laboratory procedures, and regulatory requirements.
Assist in preparing for laboratory inspections and audits.
Ensure compliance with all safety and health regulations, including proper handling and disposal of biohazardous materials.
Qualification, Experiences and Competencies
Diploma or Bachelor’s degree in Medical Laboratory Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science, or a related field.
Certification by relevant professional bodies is preferred.
Experience:
Previous experience working in a clinical laboratory setting is preferred.
Skills and Competencies:
Technical Skills:
Minimum 2 years of experience working in a clinical/hospital laboratory setting with proficiency in laboratory techniques and procedures and using LIS software.
Knowledge of laboratory equipment and maintenance.
Attention to Detail:
Strong attention to detail and accuracy in performing tests and recording results.
Communication Skills:
Effective communication skills for interacting with healthcare professionals and patients.
Problem-Solving:
Ability to troubleshoot and resolve technical issues.
Teamwork:
Ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.
Commitment to maintaining high standards of patient care and confidentiality.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to stand for extended periods.
Manual dexterity to handle specimens and operate laboratory equipment.
Ability to lift and move laboratory supplies and equipment as needed.
Work Environment:
Hospital laboratory setting.
Exposure to biological and chemical hazards.
Requirement to follow safety protocols and wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
